CONSTRUCTION of new facilities at Balcatta Senior High School is set to start in the next couple of months.

The State Government’s $50 million redevelopment project at the school is out for tender, with applications closing on Friday.

Education Department infrastructure executive director John Fischer said the tender would be awarded in April with construction to commence soon after.

“The new north block will be built in the first stage of works and will include the school administration, performing arts facilities, science learning area, general classrooms, staff areas, cafeteria, sports hall and change rooms,” he said.

“Some demolition work of old facilities will also be part of stage one.”

“Following the completion of stage one, works for the construction of the new design and technologies building, cafeteria and general refurbishments to the rest of the school will begin.”

Mr Fischer said stage one was expected to be finished by September 2020 and project completion was slated for early 2021.

Architecture firm Hassell Studio, which was appointed to design the redevelopment last January, has released artist impressions of the upgraded school.

Heritage buildings along Poincare Street will be refurbished to accommodate education support facilities.
