Architect appointed to design $50m Balcatta SHS upgrades, public invited to give feedback

Mon 05 February 2018

FEEDBACK is invited on plans for the Balcatta Senior High School redevelopment following the appointment of an architect for its design.

Perth architecture firm Hassell will design the $50 million project, which aims to upgrade the school’s 1967-built facilities to modern and high quality amenities.

The first stage of construction is expected to start early next year and is likely to include a performing arts centre, sports hall and new humanities and English, design and technologies, science and administration buildings.

Buildings on Poincare Street will be renovated in line with Heritage Council requirements for the second stage, with work expected to finish by the end of 2021.

The redevelopment is part of an election commitment made by the State Government last year.

Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery said the school’s facilities had long needed upgrades.

“This redevelopment will ensure students have access to the best possible learning environment,” she said.

“When construction is complete the school will have capacity to welcome more than 1000 students from years 7 to 12.”

Balcatta MLA David Michael is encouraging residents and the school community to be part of consultation starting this term.

“The teachers and school staff at Balcatta Senior High School are already committed to giving local kids the best education – the new facilities will ensure students continue to reach their full potential,” he said.

“I will be driving consultation with the community to ensure that the school we end up with is the one that the community needs.”
